Baskets For Babies Vandalized

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - A Spokane Valley charity called Baskets for Babies is recovering Sunday after someone jumped the fence around the back of the building and stole items meant for local families.

"I don't know exactly what was missing, but it's just very disheartening that somebody would jump the fence and vandalize a nonprofit that's just trying to help out families in need," said owner and founder Tamra McClellan.

When Tamra walked into the store Saturday, she saw something she wasn't expecting.

"This was three feet deep in clothing that was sopping wet all the way back to about here," Tamra said referring to the outdoor patio.

The vandals tore through every bag on the patio and disabled the security cameras.

"It's locked and you figure people would have morals and manners, but nowadays that's just not the case," Tamra said.

The nonprofit collects diapers, clothing, strollers, and even baby formula for families who cannot afford to buy the items on their own.

"My oldest daughter found out she was expecting and was back in school and couldn't afford stuff, so I started hitting yard sales," Tamra said.

After helping her daughter, she decided to do the same for others.

"One day she looked at me and said 'mom, I don't have anymore room, go help somebody else' and I said that's a great idea," Tamra said.

A great idea that has helped hundreds of families throughout the Spokane Community.

"Kids come in all summer long to get swimsuits and clothing," Tamra said.

So, why anyone would want to steal what others have donated, is a mystery to the charity.

"It's all free, so why would they jump the fence and ransack the place and steal stuff? It's all free anyway just come through the front door," Tamra said.

Had they come through the front door, Tamra says she would have given them anything they needed. The charity filed a police report immediately. However, because the suspect was not caught on camera and no evidence was left behind at the scene, Tamra says police have no leads at this time.
