Cougars Trade Big Plays on Day 4

The Washington State University football team continued preseason camp with a two-hour workout in helmets and shoulder pads Monday afternoon.

Working out in helmets and shoulder pads for the second straight day, the Cougars seemed to dial up the intensity a little more from the previous day as more sounds of pads and helmets popping could be heard throughout the afternoon. Following the familiar practice plan of individuals and 1-vs.-1 battles, the Cougars worked through a couple periods of special teams that focused on punt return and punt coverage. Sandwiched in between the two special teams segments, WSU worked through its daily 7-vs.-7 session while the defensive and offensive lines matched up in a running game drill.

Things really picked up in the team segment as both sides of the ball traded big plays. The defense made the first play as senior linebacker Justin Sagote exploded through the line and into the backfield to stop the running back for a loss. Redshirt-junior quarterback later followed with a nice strong throw to redshirt-junior Kristoff Williams for a long gain and first down. The offense strung a couple productive plays together before the defense came away with a turnover by forcing freshman wideout River Cracraft to fumble as he caught  a pass was working his way up the field.

On the offense's second drive, redshirt-freshman quarterback Austin Apodaca completed passes to sophomores Brett Bartolone and Gabe Marks for third down conversions but again the defense buckled down and forced Apodaca into a mistake as senior cornerback Damante Horton picked off a softly thrown pass. A couple plays later, redshirt-sophomore linebacker Darryl Monroe provided one of the bigger hits of the day, crushing Marks after he made a catch in traffic. Marks held on to the ball and the offense picked up the first down on the play. A few plays, the offense took advantage of a miscue by the WSU defensive backs, allowing junior wideout Isiah Myers to get behind the defense, allowing Apodaca to hit Myers in the endzone for the score. The defense closed the day by breaking up a pass in the endzone but the offense was awarded the win for the day, forcing the defense to do a brief set of "up-downs."

WSU continues preseason camp Tuesday and is expected to practice in full pads for the first time this camp. Practice is set for 3 p.m.
