Halliday Still #1 QB in WSU Practice

WSU Athletics provided information for the following story:

LEWISTON, Idaho -- With WSU head men's basketball coach Ken Bone in attendance, the Cougars continued preseason football camp with a 90-workout in helmets and shoulder pads Thursday.  The practice was scaled down by 30 minutes after a series of 2-hour sessions over the past six days.

In team drills, redshirt junior Connor Halliday directed the first series on offense.  The former Ferris (Spokane) quarterback hit redshirt sophomore receiver Dominique Williams for a big gain and a first down midway through the initial drive.  He later connected with sophomore runningback Teondray Caldwell out of the backfield, with Caldwell sprinting down the sideline and loweering his shoulder for a bone-jarring hit against a defensive back.  Halliday also connected with sophomore wideout Gabe Marks for another crucial first down in the red zone on the drive.

Redshirt freshmane Austin Apodaca, who is competing with Halliday for the starting quarterback job, saw his offense stall out in the red zone after a fumble that was recovered by senior linebacker Justin Sagote.

WSU continues preseason camp Friday at 3 p.m.  The team will return to Pullman for its first fall practice at Martin Stadium the following Tuesday.

      Roach, a junior from Marinwood, California, becomes the 12th player in Pirate history to earn NWC Player of the Year recognition.

      The 5-3 guard from Honolulu averaged 15.3 points, 5.3 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game.  She led the conference in assists by a wide margin and ranked 23rd in all of NCAA Division III.

      Bliznyuk is now 31 points from becoming just the fifth player in league history to hit the 2,000-point mark in his career after making 53.3 percent of his shots from the field last week.
