Airway Heights Brush Fire

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash - A brush fire in Airway Heights charred several acres of land on Friday morning. The fire broke out just after 10:00 am in the west plains, just feet from several homes. At one point two homes were threatened one of the homes belonging to an elderly woman confined to a wheel chair. "You think you're set for this but you're never really set for anything. It's just a common sense feature like I said before you just pay attention and watch what you're doing and how it started, I really don't know yet" says David Paulsen who takes care of the woman.

Crews from both Fire District Ten and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources responded to Friday morning's fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but the crews were able to contain the brush fire between two to three acres. Due to the dry and hot weather the fire could have been much worse and firefighters are warning people to be very careful this weekend with outdoor activities as this hot weather continues. Fire Chief Nick Scharff said "Conditions are very high, high fire danger because of the low humidity that we're seeing because of the hot weather".

Firefighters say that if you do plan to enjoy the outdoors with a barbecue or plan to camp, be mindful of just how dry it is. The fire Chief said even a lawn mower hitting a rock in grass like this could cause a spark that turns into a bigger brush fire.
