Last Practice Before Scrimmage for Cougs

By Washington State Univ. Athletics

LEWISTON, Idaho -- The Washington State University football team continued preseason camp with a practice in helmets and shoulder pads for just over an hour Friday afternoon.

The Cougars worked through an abbreviated practice plan, going through individual position workouts, a special teams segment that focused on kick return, a 7-vs.-7 session with the defensive and offensive lines matched up in a running game drill and finished with a team segment.

There were a couple highlight plays in 7-vs.-7 as senior safety Casey Locker came away with an interception after a receiver bobbled a pass and Locker was right there to make the pick. Redshirt-sophomore running back Jeremiah Laufasa later caught a touchdown pass from redshirt-freshman quarterback Austin Apodaca, with Laufasa reaching out to make the over-the-shoulder catch.

In team, redshirt-junior Connor Halliday quarterbacked the first series and hit junior running back Marcus Mason out of the backfield for a big gain. Halliday capped the series with red zone touchdown passes to sophomore wideouts Gabe Marks and Brett Bartolone. The second series, led by Apodaca, began with a sack from junior defensive end Logan Mayes before the offense bounced back with a nifty first-down run by sophomore Teondray Caldwell. Later in the drive, Apodaca connected with redshirt-senior running back Leon Brooks for a big gain as Brooks cut away from a couple defenders before getting forced out of bounds inside the 10 yard line. Apodaca closed the day by rolling out to his right and finding Marks in the end zone for a score, giving the offense the win for the day.
