Spokane, WA.- The Spokane Chiefs have announced that Tanner Mort will not return for the 2013-14 season. The 20-year-old defenseman has chosen to retire from competitive hockey and pursue other opportunities.

Mort played in 137 games for the Chiefs, scored 32 points (four goals, 28 assists) and recorded 85 PIM. He missed the majority of the 2012-13 season after sustaining a neck injury on October 12, 2012, at Kamloops. Though any head trauma subsided quickly, the neck injury symptoms persisted, which influenced Mort's decision to move on.

"The Chiefs would like to thank Tanner for his contribution to our organization over the last four years and wish him the best as he works toward his degree," Chiefs General Manager Tim Speltz said. "Tanner always represented himself and the Chiefs professionally and with class. We are proud of his commitment and dedication over his time with our team. Tanner will always be part of the Chiefs family."

After four seasons in Spokane, Mort will take advantage of the Chiefs Continuing Education Scholarship Program. For each season, a player accrues a year's worth of education costs to a state or provincial school. Mort, using this education funding, will attend the University of Idaho where he will study engineering.

"I am looking forward to attending the University of Idaho and taking advantage of my Continuing Education fund," Mort said. "I couldn't be more thankful to the Chiefs organization, my teammates and the fans for the way I have been treated. I have met some great people and made memories that I will remember for the rest of my life."

Ticket packages for the 2013-14 season are currently on sale. The Chiefs will open the regular season on the road against Tri-City on Saturday, September 21 with Bud Light Opening Night taking place on Saturday, September 28 as they host the Americans.
