IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) - An eastern Idaho man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of a toddler late last year.

Twenty-year-old Antonio Marcos Bautista was arrested Tuesday at an Idaho Falls home because prosecutors say he killed 16-month-old daughter, Esmiie Quezada, on Dec. 31, 2012. The child was the daughter of Bautista's girlfriend, 19-year-old Leiyah Quezada.

Police said the child was found unresponsive in the early morning hours of Dec. 30 and was flown to a hospital in Salt Lake City, where she died of a skull fracture.

Bautista requested a public defender. His next court appearance is set for Aug. 27.

First-degree murder by aggravated battery is punishable by up to life in prison or death.
