Door-To-Door Sales: Scam? Not A Scam? How To Know

KHQ viewers have reported several encounters with door-to-door sales people with "foreign accents" being very pushy and trying to sell kids books. The reports have been from all over, including Post Falls, Rosalia, Airway Heights and Spokane.

On Thursday KHQ tracked down one of these salesmen in Airway Heights and questioned him about the legitimacy of his business. The salesmen identified himself as "Jakub" and working for a company named, Southwestern Advantage. Jakub also showed KHQ a business license given to him by the city of Airway Heights.

KHQ also confirmed the license was real & accurate.

KHQ did some digging in to the company. According to the Better Business Bureau it has an A+ rating with 33 out of 232 complaints related to sales issues. The company hires American & foreign students to go door to door to sell its products, mainly kids books. The students are contracted out and technically self employed.

KHQ's Dylan Wohlenhaus spoke to Trey Campbell a spokesman with the company. He says "since our product is mainly for kids, The students are looking for prospects who would be a fit for the product. So its people with kids. If it's a family without kids they wouldn't really be a prospect for the product."

Campbell also says there have been several "rumors" nationwide about the company is involved in human trafficking, since their products target kids. The "rumors" were investigated by the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, after concerned citizens called about the company. According to the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics "OBN has found no evidence of human trafficking or forced labor or any kind."

The Better Business Bureau says, although some door to door sales people may be pushy, or even aggressive the companies and products they represent may be very real. It's up to you whether or not to let them inside and or buy their product. Trey Campbell with Southwestern Advantage says the company does not teach its sales associates "aggressive" sales tactics.
