UPDATE: Brush Fire Off Of Cheney-Spangle Road 100% Contained

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. -
The brush fire burning south of Spokane near Cheney-Spangle Road is now 100 percent contained after a nerve racking afternoon.

The plume of smoke that seemed to grow bigger and bigger Tuesday afternoon had a lot of people concerned as it grew to over 50 acres. The fire was burning through brush and meadows into areas of dense Ponderosa pine trees. Luckily the first crews on scene kept if from spreading to nearby homes and barns.

A Spokane County Incident Management team added equipment and personnel from all over the area, including nearly 30 trucks, 100 firefighters and 4 planes that helped keep the fire from spreading by dumping retardant.

Late Tuesday afternoon, members of the incident team were able to tour the area and using a GPS, learned the fire only scorched about 50 acres instead of the 100 originally estimated.

Property owners and folks living in the area told KHQ they get nervous every fire season living in the country, especially when it gets this dry.
A few crews remained on scene putting out hot spots and making sure there weren't any flare-ups fueled by the wind. They hope to start the mop up process as early as Wednesday morning.
