UPDATE: Brush Fire Off Of Cheney-Spangle Road 100% Contained

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. -
The brush fire burning south of Spokane near Cheney-Spangle Road is now 100 percent contained after a nerve racking afternoon.

The plume of smoke that seemed to grow bigger and bigger Tuesday afternoon had a lot of people concerned as it grew to over 50 acres. The fire was burning through brush and meadows into areas of dense Ponderosa pine trees. Luckily the first crews on scene kept if from spreading to nearby homes and barns.

A Spokane County Incident Management team added equipment and personnel from all over the area, including nearly 30 trucks, 100 firefighters and 4 planes that helped keep the fire from spreading by dumping retardant. 

Late Tuesday afternoon, members of the incident team were able to tour the area and using a GPS, learned the fire only scorched about 50 acres instead of the 100 originally estimated. 

Property owners and folks living in the area told KHQ they get nervous every fire season living in the country, especially when it gets this dry.
A few crews remained on scene putting out hot spots and making sure there weren't any flare-ups fueled by the wind. They hope to start the mop up process as early as Wednesday morning.

UPDATE: Fire officials say the brush fire burning off of W. Depot Springs Road is now 100% contained. Crews are still on scene mopping up. 

UPDATE: Fire is now 70% contained and crews are hoping for full containment around 8:00pm Tuesday night.  After a tour of the fire, crews say they are now estimating it at 50 acres, not 100. 

UPDATE: Fire officials say they are estimating the fire to be at about 100 acres, however it is no longer threatening homes.

Prosecutors said they’re planning on filing more charges against them after getting word that one of the victims might not walk again due to her injuries. Police say Katie Kinney and Trystan Clark were arrested for the purse snatchings. One of their victims included 75-year-old Kathy Kohlieber. She’s in the hospital for a broken pelvis....
