UPDATE: Salvation Army Shooting Case Forwarded To Prosecutor's Office

Press Release From Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team:

The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Teams (S.I.R.R.) investigation into the Salvation Army Shooting, that occurred on August 22nd, has been forwarded to the Prosecutors Office for review. Attached is the original SIRR release reference this incident.

Officer Involved Shooting

On Thursday, August 22nd, 2013, at about 6:00 a.m., Spokane Police Officers responded to a suspicious person call near the area of Division and N. River Drive. Officers were advised a red Dodge truck had intentionally collided with another vehicle in what appeared to be a possible road rage incident.

Officers located the red Dodge a short time later on N. Division. A short pursuit was initiated by Officers which ended in the parking lot of the Salvation Army, located at 204 E. Indiana.

When Officers attempted to contact the suspect an altercation took place. Officers ultimately shot the suspect, then administered first aid. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he has since been pronounced dead.

The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team, comprised of investigators from the Spokane Police Department, the Spokane County Sheriff's Office and the Washington State Patrol, are investigating the incident. The Spokane County Sheriff's Office is the managing agency for this incident and information regarding this incident will come through their office. The Medical Examiner's Office will release the identity and manner of death of the suspect at a later time. The Spokane Police Department will release the identity of the Officers involved at a later time as well.

UPDATE: The man shot by Spokane Police officers has been identified as 40-year-old Danny Cecil Jones.

Jones had a wife and three kids. They were staying at the Salvation Army at the time of the shooting and watched the whole ordeal from the window, all of this according to Danny's father.

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SPOKANE POLICE DEPT: At approximately 6:08 Thursday morning the Spokane Police Department received a call that two vehicles had collided with one another. The vehicles were described as a red truck and a white truck. Preliminary investigation indicates that the initial contact between the vehicles took place in the area of Main and Division.

The driver of the white truck called 911 and remained on the line with the operator throughout the incident. At 6:09 (approximately 1 minute later) the driver of the white truck reported being struck again by the red truck at the intersection of East N. River Drive and North Ruby Place.

Both vehicles left the scene with the white truck following the red truck heading northbound on Division. The vehicles passed a marked Spokane Police vehicle that was parked on the side of Division. 

The Spokane Police Officer pursued the red truck which turned right on Indiana and pulled into the Salvation Army parking lot (204 E. Indiana). Several Spokane Police vehicles attempted to box in the red truck in the parking lot. Officers gave repeated verbal commands to the driver of the red truck. The driver of the red truck began ramming into parked police vehicles. 

A witness at the scene indicated that he/she believed the driver of the red truck was trying to strike officers with his vehicle.

At 6:12 officers reported that shots were fired. The preliminary investigation indicates that four Spokane Police Officers fired their weapons.

The driver was struck, officers immediately administered first aid, he was transported to the hospital and was subsequently pronounced deceased.

  • The Spokane County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy today and will release the name of the deceased.
  • The Spokane Police Department will release the names of the officers involved in the incident within 72 hours.
  • The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team (SIRR) comprised of the Spokane County Sheriff's Office, Washington State Patrol and the Spokane Police Department will investigate this incident.

BREAKING UPDATE: The officer involved shooting happened in the parking lot of the Salvation Army at Ruby & Indiana shortly before 7 this morning. The male victim suffers from a gunshot wound and his condition is unknown at this hour. Multiple police officers from the Spokane Police Dept. responded to the scene. Our Katie Steiner is following this story closely and will have live updates all morning long on KHQ.

The Spokane Police Department advises that the 200 block of Indiana and Nora will be shut down for several hours. The Division Street bridge over the Spokane River also is closed.

KHQ.COM - There's been an officer involved shooting involving the Spokane Police Dept. near Indiana and Ruby just north of downtown Spokane. The male victim has been taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

We're told that the area will be blocked off for the next several hours. We'll post more details as we get them.

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SALVATION ARMY:

The Salvation Army of Spokane is cooperating with the Spokane Police Department as part of an ongoing investigation.

There was an officer involved shooting on the Salvation Army campus at 204 E Indiana Avenue, Spokane, WA.  99207 in the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 22nd, 2013.

One person was shot and taken to a local hospital.  The Spokane Police are thoroughly investigating.

Due to the investigation, all programs at The Salvation Army campus are temporarily closed and will reopen upon further notification.  That includes access to the Food Bank, The Nurturing Center and other programs. 

The Housing & Essential Needs Program (HEN) is open with entrance on the Indiana and Lidgerwood administration entrance, unless access becomes inaccessible.

The Salvation Army will continue to work with law enforcement on this issue and will keep the public and its clients up to date as more information becomes available.

    SPOKANE, Wash - Spokane firefighters had to work quickly to contain a Hillyard garage fire late Saturday night and keep it from spreading. The fire, reported at about 7:15 p.m., was producing heavy fire and smoke from a detached garage and shop area when crews arrived at 3714 E. Princeton. The size of the fire and the amount of stuff inside the garage forced crews to use defensive tactics to extinguish the blaze. It was brought under control in about an hour.
