Delbert Belton Murder Suspect Makes First Court Appearance

Posted: Updated:

The courtroom was packed Monday for the first appearance of 16-year-old Demetrius Glenn with friends and family of both Delbert Belton and Demetrius Glenn.

There are a lot of emotions on both sides of this case, so extra security was added to the courtroom for the first appearance Monday. Judge Richard Leland kept bail set at what the state had recommended.

"Because of the egregious facts, because of the vulnerability of this particular individual, because of the particular violence, the court will be maintaining the bond in the amount of $2 million dollars," said Judge Leland in Spokane County District Court.

Although Demetrius Glenn is 16-years-old, he is being tried as an adult. First appearances of this nature are usually held in Spokane County Superior Court, however, Glenn's was held in Spokane County District Court Monday to speed up the trail.

Glenn is facing first degree murder and first degree robbery charges. Both are Class A Felonies, which means Glenn could face life in prison and a $50,000 fine.

"Right now the evidence doesn't indicate what happened," said Demetrius Glenn's Attorney Christian Phelps. "We obviously have the injuries and the death of Mr. Belton, but beyond that we don't have any evidence that implicates either one of these kids directly."

According to court documents, both Demetrius Glenn and Kenan Adams-Kinard were identified in surveillance video from other businesses in the area on the night of the attack.

Glenn turned himself in and court documents say that during evidence collection, detectives found a small cut on the knuckle of his right ring finger and a small abrasion on his right index finger.

However, there are still a lot of questions to be answered about what happened that night. Spokane Police say this is not a hate crime, but instead a robbery gone wrong. Friends of the victim, Delbert Belton, were in court Monday trying to understand why this attack happened.

"I thought I was going to come in here with the attitude of being very mad and seeing those boys, those boys are little boys, I can't imagine how their family feels, but imagine how we feel losing someone very special to us," said Laura Gates, a friend of Delbert Belton.

The other suspect in this case, 16-year-old Kenan Adams-Kinard is expected to make his first appearance in court Tuesday afternoon. Both are charged with first degree murder and first degree robbery.
