Delbert Belton's Friends Speak Out About His Death

SPOKANE, Wash. -

A memorial for Delbert "Shorty" Belton, 88, continues to grow outside the Eagles Lodge in North Spokane, where Belton was brutally beaten and left for dead last Wednesday night.

"To think this could happen is beyond belief," Belton's neighbor Wes Ackaret said.  "It just destroys your heart and soul."

If there is any good out of this terrible situation, his friends say it's the outpouring of support from the community.  Hundreds of people were at a vigil held in his memory Friday night, and the collection of cards, candles and flags outside the Eagles Lodge grows nearly every day.

"It's been heart-wrenching and heart-warming at the same time," Dave Miletich, a past president of the Eagles Lodge said.  "He would give you the shirt off his back, that's the type of guy he was, and that's why he was so loved."

While Belton's friends are happy to see the two suspects in his murder have been arrested, Demetruis Glenn, 16, and Kenan Adams-Kinard, 16, they are struggling to understand what happened in those crucial moments when the WWII veteran was attacked.

"It's a question I ask myself and I know a lot of veterans ask themselves: why?  Why did this have to happen?" Ackaret added.
