California Fire Prompts Unhealthy Air Warnings In Nevada

GROVELAND, Calif. (AP) - The giant wildfire burning at the edge of Yosemite National Park has not only destroyed buildings and threatened water supplies, electricity and sequoias, it has also unleashed a smoky haze that has worsened air quality more than 100 miles away.

The plume from the Rim Fire in California triggered emergency warnings along parts of the eastern Sierra near Carson City, Nev.

School children were kept inside Tuesday for the second time in a week, people went to hospitals complaining of eye and throat irritation and officials urged people for the first time to avoid all physical activity outdoors.

The air quality index briefly surpassed the rare "hazardous" level east of Lake Tahoe before improving Tuesday afternoon.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Donald Trump has ignited a firestorm of criticism and charges that he is politicizing the military by faulting a war hero for not capturing al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden sooner. Former CIA director Leon Panetta said Trump owed an apology to retired Adm. William McRaven, who had said Trump's assertion that the news media was the "enemy of the people" was "the greatest threat to democracy" in his lifetime.
