University Prepares For Showdown With Mead

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

As it was in the 2012 season, University High School begins their season with a showdown against Mead, a perennial power in the GSL.

The Titans are preparing for a much closer battle than that of a year ago.

Mead walloped University on Aug. 31, 2012, to the tune of a 43-10 shellacking. It was 43-3 until a fourth quarter touchdown pass from Titans quarterback Jeff Beaty made the score somewhat more respectable.

For Titans coach Rob Bartlett, the first game will say a lot about the quality of his team. "We love our opener," he said. "We're really excited. We're going to find out who we are, how good we can be. Any time you take on the Panthers, you know you're going to be in for a game. We can't wait. I'm sure they can't wait to take on the Titans. We're building everything we can for motivation."

University finished with an 8-5 overall record in 2012, losing to Eastside Catholic in the semifinals of the WIAA 3A state playoffs. Despite losing a number of starters to graduation, coach Bartlett remains positive about the headship of his squad. "We were really fortunate a year ago to have phenomenal senior leadership, and I think we have that again," Bartlett said. "We were consistent in the weight room, we do a great job with our weight and agility program throughout the summer, and we had a weight room full of kids all summer long with just great intensity."

Trevor Martin, a returning starter who plays cornerback, wide receiver and kicker, was optimistic in his outlook for the 2013 season. "First we got to get through Mead," Martin said. "But, I think we can take the GSL, go pretty deep in the playoffs. That's my goal. I just want to have a good year, go out strong."

Martin said the hard work put in be he and his teammates will pay dividends when they match up against the Panthers on Sept. 5. "Last year we put together two good quarters, but we couldn't finish it. If we can put together four quarters, then we'll give them a run for their money."

Beaty, like Martin, also had lofty goals for his team. "We've talked about winning the GSL, beat Central Valley, our rival, beat Shadle, get our first seed in the playoffs and get back to where we left off last year.

"Everyone's getting a lot more intense. They're excited."
