Spokane needed a win in the worst way, and it delivered, defeating Everett soundly in the second-to-last regular season home game.

Seattle finished the 2013 preseason with an unblemished 4-0 record, and although that doesn't mean a whole lot, it does reflect the amount of depth and talent on the roster. Going from 75 to 53 in the final cutdown will be a tough day, but a lot of those players will find jobs elsewhere.

Mary and Mark Few's Coaches Vs. Cancer program raised over $742,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Franklin Gutierrez hit a two-run homer after Nick Franklin gave Seattle an early lead with a solo shot and the Mariners held on for a 3-2 victory over the Houston Astros on Thursday night to end a six-game skid.

"At EWU (Glen) Dean was Big Sky Freshman of the year in 2009-10 and a second-team all-Big Sky honoree in 2010-11, and a two-time Big Sky All-Academic selection."

The roar of high-powered engines will be ever-present at Lake Coeur d'Alene this Labor Day weekend, as The Diamond Cup and H1 Unlimited Hydroplane racing return to the north Idaho inland sea as the seventh stop on the H1 Hydroplane circuit.

When the Post Falls Trojans take the field at 7:00 p.m. Friday against Capital (Boise) – a game broadcast on SWX with anchor Sam Adams at the call – they'll return 12 starters, including Joey Pfennigs, a three-year starter at quarterback. Pfennigs led an underwhelming offense in 2012 that scored more than 20 points just two times, and the team sputtered to a 2-7 overall record.
