EVERETT, Wash. -- Rookie defenseman Matt Sozanski scored his first career WHL goal, but the Spokane Chiefs fell to the Portland Winterhawks 6-1 in Everett on Friday afternoon. Sixteen rookies suited up for Spokane's first preseason game of the year, including goaltenders Tyson Verhelst and Trevor Martin, who each played half the game in net.

Portland scored three times in the 1st Period, twice in the 2nd and once in the 3rd. Nicolas Petan, a 2nd Round 2013 NHL Draft selection of the Winnipeg Jets, scored three goals for the Winterhawks.

Keanu Yamamoto recorded his first career WHL point, assisting Sozanski's third period goal along with fellow rookie forward Markson Bechtold.

Martin made 19 saves on 23 shots, while Verhelst stopped 21 of 23.

The Chiefs take on the Everett Silvertips at the Comcast Arena in Everett tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.
