SWX Beat Clicks - Sept. 4, 2013

Celebration time has ceased – It's time to get back to football.

A little over 72 hours after Oregon State kicker Trevor Romaine's 52-yard attempt sailed wide and Eastern became the fourth FCS team in history to beat a ranked FBS team, Eagles players and coaches made it clear that they're moving on. EWU takes on Western Oregon University – a Division-II program – in the home opener at Roos Field on Saturday.

Not surprisingly, the national accolades are pouring in for Eastern Washington University quarterback Vernon Adams.

On Monday morning (Sept. 2), the sensational sophomore was selected by The Sports Network as its NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Offensive Player of the Week after leading fourth-ranked EWU to a 49-46 victory over 25th-ranked Oregon State from the Pac-12 Conference foe on Saturday (Aug. 31).

Ben Johnson has decided to leave the Washington State University men's basketball staff, head coach Ken Bone announced Tuesday. Johnson spent the previous nine years as an assistant coach under Bone and his predecessors Tony Bennett and Dick Bennett.

It's not completely uncommon for a Division II quarterbacks coach to have professional experience. It is slightly more rare, however, for a quarterbacks coach to still be playing professionally.

Erik Meyer is exactly that. He took over as the quarterbacks coach, while Central Washington University head coach John Picha will coach the running backs.

Salvador Perez drove in Mike Moustakas with two outs in the eighth inning, and the Kansas City Royals survived after blowing a three-run lead to beat the Seattle Mariners 4-3 on Tuesday night.

The Seattle Seahawks have placed three of their 2013 draft picks on their eight-man practice squad.

The Seahawks brought back offensive linemen Ryan Seymour and Jared Smith, and linebacker Ty Powell, all three taken in April's draft and released last week. Smith is making the transition from defensive line to center.

Seattle also added defensive tackle Michael Brooks, tight end Cooper Helfet, defensive back DeShawn Shead, defensive tackle Sealver Siliga and wide receiver Bryan Walters. Siliga was acquired from Denver in a trade during training camp.

The Eastern Washington athletics department is partnering with Tagboard in an effort to enhance its social media game day experience and make its fans a part of the atmosphere like never before.

Debuting this Saturday at EWU Football's home opener versus Western Oregon, fans are encouraged to use the official hash tag of Eastern Athletics, #GoEags, to see their posts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram featured on the Roos Field video scoreboard.

Washington State University men's basketball will appear on television at least 28 times during the 2013-14 season, including 21 games on the Pac-12 Networks, commissioner Larry Scott announced Tuesday, along with the Pac-12 men's basketball schedule.

The Spokane Chiefs have reassigned six players back to their home clubs as they prepare for their second preseason tournament of the season this weekend in Kennewick. The team is now carrying 30 players, including three goaltenders, 16 forwards and 11 defensemen.
