Chiefs Overpower Ice, 5-1

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- The Spokane Chiefs outscored the Kootenay Ice 3-1 in the 2nd period en route to a 5-1 victory on Friday afternoon. Mike Aviani and Mitch Holmberg, both playing in their first preseason game of the year, scored two goals apiece, including a shorthanded effort netted by Holmberg and assisted by Aviani.

Aviani's first goal came in the 1st period at the 12:00 mark, assisted by Stewart Coyle and rookie Matt Sozanski. The assist was Sozanski's fourth point of the preseason. Heading into the 1st intermission, the Chiefs led 1-0 and were outshooting the Ice 11-8.

Aviani scored his second goal and Holmberg punched in his shorthanded goal to increase the lead to 3-0 with just over six minutes remaining in the 2nd period. Kootenay's veteran right winger Zach McPhee put the Ice on the board at the 15:18 mark. Chiefs rookie defenseman Colton Bobyk pushed the margin again to three with a goal just before the period ended, assisted by Alex Whitwham and Blair Oneschuk.

The Chiefs went into the 2nd intermission ahead 4-1, outshooting Kootenay 27-24.

Both teams were scoreless in the 3rd until Holmberg added his second goal with 6:34 remaining, assisted by Jeremy McIntosh and Bobyk.

Tyson Verhelst started the game in goal, played 31:09 and stopped all 12 shots he faced. Veteran Eric Williams subbed in at the 11:09 mark of the 2nd period and finished the game, allowing one goal on 24 shots faced.

Spokane's penalty kill was perfect on the night, not allowing a goal in 10 shorthanded situations.

Final SOG: Spokane 32, Kootenay 36.

The Chiefs play Tri-City tomorrow night in Kennewick. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
