Chiefs Handle Ams, 5-3 for 2nd Preseason Win

By the Spokane Chiefs

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Tyler King scored just 27 seconds into the 1st period and the Chiefs never trailed, beating the Tri-City Americans 5-3 on Saturday night. It was a back-and-forth game in Kennewick, as the game was tied at 2-2 and 3-3 before the Chiefs finally pulled away.

After King's goal (assisted by Jacob Cardiff and Tyson Predinchuk), Mitch Holmberg took advantage of a Tri-City turnover to score his third goal of the preseason. The 2-0 lead was short lived, as the Chiefs would allow two power play goals to close the 1st period. Braden Purtill scored at the 14:20 mark and veteran Mitch Topping added one with just 10 seconds remaining.

The Chiefs scored a power play goal of their own just over five minutes into the 2nd period, as rookie forward Alex Whitwham scored off assists from Holmberg and Mike Aviani. The Americans answered with a goal from Brian Williams at 11:39 to tie it, 3-3. Liam Stewart returned the favor with a late period goal, scoring with just eight seconds remaining in the 2nd period to put the Chiefs ahead 4-3.

Cardiff scored the only goal in the 3rd period to reach the final score. Rookies Markson Bechtold and Jeff Rayman tallied the assists, marking the first point in Rayman's WHL career.

Eric Williams started the game in net, stopping 16 of 19 shots. Garret Hughson subbed in at the 11:39 mark of the 2nd period, stopping all 8 shots faced.
