Astros Rally To Beat Mariners, 6-4

SEATTLE -- It will go down as one of the most improbable wins of the year.

The Astros rallied for four runs in the ninth inning, including an RBI single by Jimmy Paredes and a two-run single by Jonathan Villar, to snap a three-game losing streak with a stirring 6-4 win over the Mariners on Monday night at Safeco Field.

The win was only the Astros' third this season when trailing after eight innings.

Astros reliever Chia-Jen Lo gave up a two-run homer to Seattle's Abraham Almonte -- the first of his career -- with one out in the seventh to put his team in a 3-2 hole.

In the ninth, the Astros rallied when Marc Krauss and Carlos Corporan drew consecutive one-out walks against closer Danny Farquhar. Paredes singled to score pinch-runner Jake Elmore from second, and Villar shot a single up the middle past a drawn-in infield to score pinch-runner Marwin Gonzalez and Paredes to put the Astros ahead, 5-3.

Villar scored the fourth run of the inning when he darted home on an errant throw by first baseman Justin Smoak following a foul popup. Smoak's throw to the plate hit batter Trevor Crowe, who had crouched a few feet down the first-base line to avoid the throw.

Astros starter Jarred Cosart, in his 10th Major League start, dropped his ERA back under 2.00 at 1.95 by holding the Mariners to two hits and an unearned run. He did walk six batters, though, giving him 35 walks in 60 innings.

Almonte doubled with one out in the first, and Cosart walked Kyle Seager to put runners at first and second. Kendrys Morales hit a grounder to second base that should have been an inning-ending double play, but Villar's relay throw to first was high. The error allowed Almonte to score.

The Astros tied the game in the second when Krauss doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Paredes, and they took a 2-1 lead in the third on back-to-back doubles by Jose Altuve and Crowe.

Seattle starter Taijuan Walker worked five innings in his final start of the season, retiring the final six batters he faced. That began a string in which Mariners pitchers sent down 15 batters in a row, a streak which ended when Villar drew a leadoff walk in the eighth.
