Mariners Trade Brendan Ryan To Yankees

Posted: Updated:
SEATTLE, Wash. -

The Seattle Mariners have traded shortstop Brendan Ryan to the New York Yankees for a player to be named later, the team announced.

Ryan was traded to the Mariners in December 2010, and is regarded as the finest defensive shortstop in baseball. Despite limited offensive production, his uncanny range and strong arm earned him a spot in the lineup in 351 games the last 2+ years in Seattle.

A lifetime .238 hitter in seven years with the St. Louis Cardinals and Mariners, Ryan hit .215 with nine home runs and 91 RBIs in Seattle from 2011-13.

If the Yankees qualify for the postseason, Ryan will be ineligible to play due to an MLB rule that mandates a player be on his team's roster on Aug. 31 to play in the postseason.
