UPDATE: Driver And 5 Bus Passengers Killed When Train Hits Bus At Crossing

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - The driver of a double-decker bus is among six people killed after the bus collided with a passenger train in the Canadian capital of Ottawa on Wednesday.

All six of the dead were on the bus. Officials say 30 people were hurt, including 10 with critical injuries. There were no major injuries among passengers and crew on the train.

Witnesses said the bus went through a closed crossing barrier. Passengers say they screamed for the driver to stop, just before the bus plowed into the side of the train.

One bus passenger says he doesn't think the driver noticed that the signals were flashing and the barrier was down. Another passenger says she wonders if the driver had blacked out. She says he didn't slow down before the bus hit the train.

It was Canada's second major rail accident this year. It comes after an oil train derailed and exploded in a Quebec town in July, killing 47 people.

Ottawa, Ontario (CNN) - A double-decker bus and a passenger train collided in Ottawa on Wednesday morning, killing five people, police said.

Fire officials in Ottawa also said at least a dozen people were injured, CTV's News Channel reported.

"We had bodies and debris pretty much everywhere at the impact site," Ottawa Fire Service's Marc Messier told CTV.

"It's definitely a serious scene," he said. "Our top priority is getting anyone with serious injuries to the hospital and getting them into proper care."

The crash happened at 8:48 a.m., the networks reported. CTV said a Via Rail train at Woodroffe Avenue and Fallowfield Road hit an Ottawa Carlton Transit city bus.

The train derailed "approximately 100 to 200 feet down the rail," Messier said, and all of the casualties were on the bus.

CBC News quoted firefighters as saying the front end of the bus suffered significant damage. It said in a Twitter message that the Transportation Safety Board was headed to the crash site.

"My thoughts are with the victims of this accident," Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said. "Please pray for those affected and for our 1st responders dealing with this tragedy."
