The Washington State volleyball team (0-1, 13-1) suffered its first defeat of the season with a 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 loss Wednesday night to No. 2 Washington (1-0, 9-0) before 1,854 fans in Bohler Gym. It was the Pac-12 opening match for both squads.

WSU freshman Kyra Holt led the team with 10 kills and was the lone Cougar to score in double figures as the team hit .131 on the night. Jaicee Harris had nine kills. Camryn Irwin had 26 assists and Shawna Lum led the team with 12 digs. WSU did not serve an ace in the 77-minute match.

Washington's All-American Krista Vansant led the match with 13 kills, hit .440, and had four blocks. Melanie Wade had six blocks as the Huskies out-blocked WSU seven to one. Jenni Nogueras had 24 assists while Cassie Strickland and Jenna Orlandini combined for 25 digs.

"I thought we were pretty tentative," WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said. "It's hard when we haven't played Pac-12 match yet, especially for a lot of our newcomers. Washington is just a fabulous team. We were pretty tentative from the beginning, and it was really hard to find our groove after that. It was tough to get our middles going. It's just a big block. If we're not aggressive with it, we can't put the ball away, it's pretty tough. They're going to put the ball away, and we're not going to get a second chance."

When asked if the Cougars could recover in time for another conference match Friday Greeny said, "You know you're going to have two matches. You're going to have to respond to whatever happened, whether that's celebrating a win, or getting ready for that next game after a loss. So, we'll be able to fly out tomorrow, get down to Oregon State, have some practice and get ready for the Beavers."

WSU travels to Corvallis to take on Oregon State (0-1, 9-3) Friday night in a 6 p.m. match broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks.
