Chapman Outlasts Whitworth 38-17

ORANGE, Calif. -

A 14-0 start and a 14-0 finish lifted Chapman to a 38-17 win over visiting Whitworth in a non-conference football game on Saturday night at Ernie Chapman Stadium.

The Panthers improved to 2-0 this season after they opened a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter, then pulled away with a 14-0 fourth quarter against the Pirates (2-2).

Cody Chapple ran for 126 yards for Chapman, while quarterback Michael Lahey threw for 170 yards and three scores and rushed for 40 more and another score.

Bryan Peterson was 15 of 22 for 198 yards for Whitworth with one touchdown.  But he was sacked five more times for 39 yards in losses.  Ricky Abernathy gave the Bucs a spark with 82 rushing yards on nine carries, while DJ Tripoli scored two more touchdowns.

Chapman took the opening possession 70 yards for a touchdown, which Lahey finished with a six-yard run.  Meanwhile the Whitworth offense struggled out of the gate, finishing with only 14 total yards (seven passing and seven rushing) in the opening period.

Lahey's three-yard touchdown pass to Derek Mendoza on the opening play of the second quarter gave the Panthers a 14-0 lead.

The Pirates then got going, thanks in part to Abernathy finding room to run the ball.  Whitworth went 75 yards, 62 by Abernathy, before Tripoli carried in from two yards out to cut the margin to 14-7.

After the Bucs forced a fumble on a sack by Jacob Kriegbaum, Whitworth ended up getting a 35-yard field goal from Kyler Gracey to pull within 14-10 with 1:50 to play in the half.

But Chapman got a quick drive into the Pirates' red zone and Markus Trujillo drilled a 32-yard field goal to extend the Panthers' lead back to seven points.

Whitworth took the opening kickoff deep into Chapman territory, but Peterson was sacked on fourth down to end the threat.  After an exchange of possessions, a long punt return by Blayr Jimmerson set up Chapman deep in the Pirate end of the field.  Back up QB Kean Stancil finished off the 29-yard drive with a three-yard scoring run to give the Panthers a 24-10 lead.
But Whitworth answered quickly as Peterson hit Tripoli with a short pass and Tripoli broke two tackles on the way to a 74-yard touchdown that got the Bucs back within 24-17 at the end of the third quarter.

Chapman then scored on its next two possessions to put the game away.  Lahey threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Kyle White to complete a 63-yard drive.  Then on fourth and goal from Whitworth's 18-yard line, tight end Anthony Ezeakunne caught a short pass and broke several tackles on the way to the endzone with 6:26 to play.

Chapman outgained Whitworth 407-319, including a 237-121 edge in rushing yardage.

The Pirates will try to end their two-game losing streak at next week's Homecoming Game and Northwest Conference opener against Pacific.
