PORTLAND, Ore. -

The Spokane Chiefs suffered their first loss of the 2013-14 season as Portland used a 4 goal first period on their way to a 6-4 win over the Chiefs Wednesday night in Portland, OR. Spokane is now 4-1 on the season and remain 1 point ahead of Portland for first place in the U.S. Division.

Portland's Nic Petan scored just 3:10 into the game to give the Winterhawks a 1-0 lead. The Chiefs Riley Whittingham scored his first of the season on a rebound of a Mitch Holmberg shot at 4:17 of the first to tie the game at one. Portland then scored 3 goals in just 2:09 to take a 4-1 lead after one. Spokane would narrow the lead to 4-2 midway through the second on Blair Oneschuk's shorthanded goal at 10:19 of the period.

Portland's Oliver Bjorkstrand scored his second of the night at 10:59 of the third to stake the Hawks to a 5-2 lead. Spokane responded with back to back power play goals from Connor Chartier and Jason Fram at 16:07 and 17:21 to cut the lead to 5-4. The Chiefs had 2 great scoring chances in the final minute with goalie Garret Hughson off for the extra attacker, but failed to score, as Petan scored an empty netter in the final seconds to secure the 6-4 win.

Spokane was outshot 38-31, while going 2-6 on the power play and 6-7 on the penalty kill. Mitch Holmberg led the offense with 3 assists, but was held without a goal for the first time this season. The Chiefs will travel to Everett for their next game Saturday night at 7:05pm. Mike Boyle will have the call on 1510 KGA with the pre-game show starting at 6:30pm.
