UPDATE: Deadly Shooting In Hillyard, Victim Identified

SPOKANE, Wash. -

UPDATE: The Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office has confirmed the identity and the cause and manner of death of the man who was found on October 9, 2013 on E. Empire.

Brandon J. Compogno, 30, died from multiple gunshot wounds. We'll post more details as we get them.

PREVIOUS STORY:

KHQ's Kelsey Watts spoke with the man who pulled the trigger in the shooting. He declined to give his real name, but said the shooting was self-defense and that he didn't know he killed the man until police told him hours later.

He said he went to the home on East Empire to buy a Blu-ray from a friend, but when he was leaving her boyfriend confronted him, pulled out a gun and cocked it. He says the boyfriend forced him back in the home where he was punched in the face and robbed.

Then, he said he was told, "This is going to go one of two ways. I can take you to the basement and kill you, or I'm going to let you do down the street and you'll be dead by the end of the day if you rat on me."

He said he was walked back out of the house with the gun to his back, when he turned, grabbed his own gun and fired. He picked up the boyfriend's gun to make sure he couldn't use it against him and ran away. He says he later turned both weapons over to police.

Police say the man who fired has been questioned and released because they don't have probable cause to charge him with murder or manslaughter right now. The investigation is ongoing.

VANCOUVER, Wash. - With Washington's new distracted driving law in effect, holding a phone while behind the wheel could cost you. In addition to the cell phone crackdown, the law makes eating, drinking or other activities that could potentially take your hands off the wheel secondary offenses. That means if you run a stop sign while drinking a cup of coffee and get pulled over for running the stop sign, you could get a $99 fine for drinking that coffee.
