FIRST ON KHQ: Train Hits Vehicle In Spokane Valley

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SPOKANE VALLEY POLICE DEPT:
On October 11th, 2013, at 9:00 a.m., Spokane Valley Sheriff's Deputies responded to a vehicle vs. train collision at Trent and Vista. 

The 68-year-old male driver was stopped on Vista south of Trent in the southbound lane of travel. According to witnesses, the driver drove through the crossing arm and was struck by the train, which was traveling westbound. 

The train was traveling an estimated 18-20 mph and pushed the vehicle approximately one-hundred-feet before coming to a stop. The driver had to be extricated and was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
 
The area has since re-opened to traffic.

SPOKANE, Wash. - A 68-year-old man is in stable condition after his Chevy Avalanche was hit by a train. It happened in the 8300 block of East Trent at the Vista Rd. crossing, just west of Argonne after 8am Friday.

The man, who hasn't been identified, drove through the crossing arms. It's not clear why he didn't wait for the train to pass. The train was going about 20 mph.

Spokane Valley Fire responded quickly and was able to extricate the man. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Vista remains closed at Trent, but is expected to reopen before noon.

(AP) - Two Army captains who met at West Point have returned there to be married, in what is believed to be the first same-sex marriage of active-duty personnel at the storied New York military academy.    The New York Times reports Captains Daniel Hall and Vincent Franchino were married on Jan. 13. They're both Apache helicopter pilots stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.
