SPOKANE VALLEY PRESS RELEASE
Homeowner Detains Burglar

Tuesday night, October 22nd, 2013, at 11:30 p.m., Spokane County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the 10000 block of East Sands Road in reference to a person with a weapon call. Deputies were advised the homeowner had caught a male subject, identified as 19-year-old Devin Hughes, attempting to break into his garage and had him detained at gunpoint. Deputies detained Hughes when they arrived on scene and located a black full face ski mask, a knife and other miscellaneous items on his person.

Hughes told deputies that his brother, 18-year-old Gage Hughes, and their friend, 18-year-old Darien Rhoads, was with him and had fled the scene. A short time later Deputy Dale Wells located Gage and Darien walking down highway 27. Both were taken into custody.

Hughes spoke with deputies and said the three of them had burglarized two other residences that evening. He said he was not certain where the residences were located. There was a vehicle parked at the residence that deputies determined belonged to Hughes. They were able to see numerous food items inside the vehicle that included beef patties and a box of steaks. The vehicle was towed to the Sheriff's Office to be processed at a later time.
  • All three suspects were booked into the Spokane County Jail on the felony charge of 2nd Degree Burglary.
