Eight Horses Up For Adoption After Seizure For Neglect, Abuse

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. -

It's been a busy few months for the Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service (or SCRAPS) after three separate seizures landed them with 30 neglected or abused horses to nurse back to health.

In the most recent case, a horse was taken from a property in Otis Orchards on October 23rd. SCRAPS reported the horse was kept in a windowless stall for several months, was described as "thin to very thin" and covered in manure. The owner is not being named because the investigation is underway and he has not been formally charged; however, he could face two counts of second-degree animal cruelty and one count of unsafe conferment.

Horses are rated on a health scale of 1-9, 9 being perfectly healthy. The Animal Protection Officer investigating the Otis Orchards case ranked that horse a 2 ½-3, however several of the animals that have been taken in lately have been in even worse condition.

"Many of the horses we've taken in scored a 1, where they'd lost muscle mass, had no body fat, they were in bad condition," SCRAPS Field Operations Manager Nicole Montano told KHQ's Kelsey Watts.

The good news is, after getting the care they need many of them have rebounded nicely and have been adopted by new families.

However, there are still 8 horses that need new homes ranging from fully-grown mares to a 7-month-old named "Moose."

So why have there been so many seizures lately?

"I think there's always the situation where people are struggling financially," Montano added. "I also think acts of animal cruelty are being reported more. The public is more aware and they're making those phone calls that should have been made all along."

Anyone can report animal abuse and you can remain anonymous. To make a call or schedule an appointment to view a horse for adoption, call SCRAPS at (509) 477-2532.
