Press Release Sent By Lake Pend Oreille School District:
Lake Pend Oreille School Superintendent Shawn Woodward said Friday that arming staff is no longer under consideration by district officials.
He said it was clear at the last board meeting that there is very little staff support for the idea. Eight percent of teachers and other certified staff were in favor and 14 percent of classified staff.
Previously, Woodward had stated that he would not recommend board adoption of a policy to arm selected staff members as a means of enhancing school security. Additionally, no consensus in support of arming staff has emerged among trustees, and two have spoken publicly against it. At the last meeting the board supported looking at other options.
"We are not finished with the broader issue of school safety," Woodward said. He is now discussing a variety of options with Sheriff Daryl Wheeler and members of his staff along with input from members of the school board, parents and community. "No one solution has yet been selected for recommendation to the board," he said.
Under board policy, the superintendent provides advice and guidance prior to board adoption of new policies. "On an issue as sensitive as school safety, it is of utmost importance to work closely with law enforcement professionals and thoroughly examine a range of possibilities," Woodward said.
