Spokane City Council District Three Race Featuring Two Newcomers

Posted: Updated:

We're less than a week away from Election Day and this year in Spokane there's an open seat in District Three for the City Council. Two newcomers Candace Mumm and Michael Cannon are vying for the seat and soon a winner will be decided. District Three covers Northwest Spokane from West Central all the way up to Indian Trail.

Candace Mumm grew up in Spokane, went to Shadle, got her MBA from Gonzaga and now she's raising her family on the northside. She calls herself the neighborhood choice. Mumm says she's worked very hard on safety improvements like putting in place new sidewalks so kids can safely walk to local schools. She made sure the new community park was designed against crime and helped to restore an old schoolhouse to an operational school. Mumm served for ten years under five mayoral administrations as a member of the planning commission, elected twice as President. Aside from her work with the city she runs a small business in town with her husband Steve. Mumm says if elected her top priority is improving emergency response time.

Michael Cannon is also new to running for public office. Cannon grew up in Spokane, graduated from Central Valley then Whitworth, and now he's raising his family here. He's hopeful he can bring a new perspective to the City Council as a business owner and local employer. Cannon has worked closely with Mayor Condon and the current council in his role as the chair of the Community Housing and Human Services Board. He says he's helped to make government more efficient by figuring out how to spend federal dollars as wisely as possible while meeting the needs of the low income in town. Cannon says if elected his two top priorities are increasing the resources for public safety and increasing the accountability and oversight within the police department.
