Vandals Smash Dozens Of Pumpkins Before Halloween

The night before Halloween, vandals smashed dozens of pumpkins all over the streets of one Cheney neighborhood.

A mom KHQ spoke with, says this was the first Halloween her three-year-old Mickayla carved a pumpkin, so they were extremely disappointed that someone would ruin it. Mickayla spent at least an hour carving her very first pumpkin and after it was finished, it was placed on the front porch with a candle.

"I went out to blow out the candles and they were already blown out," said Mickayla's mom Laurie O'Riley.

The pumpkins were already blown out because just twenty minutes after placing them on the front porch, they were smashed into pieces all over the street.

"Twenty minutes maybe, enough to take a picture, go inside and come out a few minutes later and they were gone," O'Riley said.

Around 9:00 p.m. Wednesday night, someone went door to door, smashing pumpkins and destroying lawn decorations.

"They had come and slashed a whole bunch of his inflatable's and he said had like six of them out there and he has small children and it was just very upsetting," O'Riley said.

However, the hardest part is explaining to the kids why anyone would want to ruin their Halloween fun.

"I just told her that there are some people out there who aren't nice and sometimes you just have bad things happen," O'Riley said. "I told her we're going to go buy more pumpkins today and even if they only last a day, at least she gets to carve another one."

Laurie O'Riley hopes the vandals will realize it is about more than just a few smashed pumpkins.

"It's upsetting that people would want to come and ruin such a fun time, especially for the kids," O'Riley said. "This is the time people can dress up and get a little crazy, but somebody's always go tot ruin it, it seems like."

Even though Laurie's front porch may be empty, she and her family are going to make the best of this spooky holiday.

"You can't let it ruin it," O'Riley said. "We can still go out and get our trick or treating done."

It's getting more crowded around Jupiter. A team of astronomers is reporting the discovery of a dozen new moons circling the giant gas planet.    That brings the number of moons at Jupiter to 79, the most of any planet. Saturn is next with 61.    The astronomers were looking for objects on the fringes of the solar system when they spotted the Jupiter moons. They found a dozen small moons. The confirmation of 10 was announced Tuesday; two were confirmed earlier.
