Three Eagles Earn Big Sky Honorable Mention

by Eastern Washington Sports Information Department

OGDEN, Utah – The Big Sky Conference released its All-Conference teams for the 2013 women's soccer season Tuesday after polling the league's 10 head coaches. Eastern Washington was represented in three of four position areas on the list, with Cassie Black(forward), Siara Byers (midfielder) and Kayla Sutter (defender) being awarded Honorable Mention All-Conference honors.

Black, Byers and Sutter were bright spots for the Eagles in 2013, and Eastern will benefit from having two of the three back next season. The honor was the second for Black, who earned Second-Team accolades last season, and the first for both Sutter and Byers.

Black had perhaps the most illustrious stretch of any Eagle this season, her third in an Eastern uniform. In 2013, the junior from Battle Ground, Wash. broke EWU's all-time goals record with a game-winner over Sacramento State, maintained her standing as the career leader in game-winning goals and points and goals per game, moved up the rankings in career points (38; 3rd) and shots (118; 4th) and became the program's all-time leader in shots per game (2.27).

In addition, Black registered the third-most shots in a single season in program history with 53. The total was also a career high for Black, breaking her previous personal best of 45 in 2012, and her eight shots in Eastern's final game of the season is tied for the EWU single-match record.

Byers, the lone senior honoree, leaves Eastern with 12 career points, good enough for a tie for 16th all time, after scoring one goal on 14 shots in her final season with the Eagles. Byers' five career goals rank her in a tie for 12th all time and her 60 games played is tied for 17th best all-time.

Sutter, who will return alongside Black for her senior season next year, had somewhat of a breakout campaign in leading the Eagles defensive effort in 2013. The Beaverton, Ore. native tied Eastern's single-game record for assists with a pair of key passes in Eastern's win over North Dakota State on Sept. 22 and came within one assist of tying the single-season record after putting up a third helping pass in EWU's overtime win against Sacramento State on Oct. 6.

In addition, Sutter's smart play on the back line all year, especially in crucial conference games, helped deter countless offensive opportunities for opposing teams.

2013 marks the eighth straight year and the 12th time in the past 13 seasons that at least two Eagles have earned Honorable Mention All-Big Sky accolades.
