Vandals Blowout Walla Walla in Exhibition

by University of Idaho Sports Information

MOSCOW, Idaho – The Idaho men’s basketball team showed off its athleticism and talent in a 90-49 exhibition win over Walla Walla University on Tuesday night in Memorial Gym.

Junior Connor Hill (Post Falls HS) led Idaho with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting and connected on 3-of-7 3-pointers in the win, while senior Glen Dean had 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting and added five assists.

“It’s going to be a work in progress, there’s no question about that but I thought Glen Dean played well, Connor Hill shot it pretty well,” Idaho coach Don Verlin said after the game. “Glen played I thought a very, very good floor game. He played really solid.”

Junior Bira Seck added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds for Idaho, and was 6-of-7 from the field. The vandals shot 48.6 percent (35-of-72) in the game but cooled off in the second half after shooting 64.7 percent in the first.

“We played really hard,” Verlin said. “We played with a lot of energy and intensity, especially early. We were able to take them out of their offense. I liked how hard we played.”

Idaho held Walla Walla to 36.0 percent shooting (18-of-50) and forced the Wolves into 19 turnovers, while committing just five. The Vandals owned a 44-30 advantage on the glass and totaled 19 offensive rebounds, which led to 20 second-chance points. The Vandals also took a 44-28 advantage in points in the paint.

Redshirt-freshman Ty Egbert finished with nine points and six rebounds in 17 minutes of play for the Vandals, and freshman Sekou Wiggs had eight points, four rebounds and two assists, and brought the crowd to its feel with a pair of alley-oop dunks in the first half. Joe Kammerer had six points and Paulin Mpawe added four points, five rebounds and two blocks.

“I liked the way–even though they’re a ways away–I liked the way Joe Kammerer played, and Ty (Egbert) and (Paulin) Mpawe,” Verlin said. “(Sekou) Wiggs is athletic, he made some athletic plays early. I like their intensity and I liked what I saw from them tonight.”

The game was Idaho’s only exhibition before the regular season opens on Nov. 9, when the Vandals host Western Illinois at 7 p.m. in Memorial Gym.

Two factors to look out in this upcoming season of Vandals Basketball:

  • Idaho is looking to fill the gaping hole left by last seasons All-Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Kyle Barone. The Vandals former center averaged 17.2 points and a conference leading 9.7 rebounds per game last season.
  • This will be Idaho's final season in the WAC before moving back to the Big Sky Conference on July 1, 2014.
