John Moffitt Walks Away From NFL And $1 million

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - He would have made another $300,000 for the rest of this season, and more than $700,000 next year. But instead, third-year NFL player John Moffitt is walking away from the game.

Moffitt notified the Denver Broncos this week that he wouldn't be returning to the team. The guard says he's lost his love for football, and was tired of endangering his health.

Moffitt says he thinks "it's really madness to risk your body, risk your well-being and risk your happiness for money." He says people will think he's crazy for walking away from football and from all that money. But he says, "I think what I was doing is crazy."

Moffitt majored in sociology at Wisconsin. He says his world view was shaped over the last couple of years when he began studying the writings of the Dalai Lama and Noam Chomsky. He says he's looking forward to speaking his mind on the radio and on podcasts -- and that he'll have plenty to say on everything from philosophy to politics.

He also wants to go on a diet, now that he doesn't have to maintain his 319-pound physique.
