Woman Walks Into Mead Home And Finds Burglar

SPOKANE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE PRESS RELEASE
Mead Burglar Caught In Home

On Tuesday, November 5th, 2013, Deputy Jennifer Sutter responded to the 4000 block of E. 3rd in Mead on a residential burglary call. Deputy Sutter contacted the homeowner who told her she had left her house at about 8:40 a.m. and when she returned home at about 9:30 a.m. she saw a gold vehicle in her driveway that she did not recognize.

The homeowner walked into her residence and heard someone inside. She asked who was there and a male subject, later identified as 25-year-old Ryan Howard, came out from her son's bedroom. Ralph said she did not know Howard and asked him what he was doing. Howard told her he was looking for Josh, whom the homeowner did not know. The homeowner told Howard to leave and also took photographs of him and his vehicle with her phone.

The homeowner showed Deputy Sutter a flat screen tv, a heater and a bag filled with jewelry that was left on the floor near the front door. These items had been removed from two bedrooms.

Deputy Sutter was able to connect Howard to the vehicle he was driving and confirmed his identity through a records check. She and Deputy Tim Greenfield responded to Howard's known address where they made contact with him. Howard said he was with a friend that had gone into the house to retrieve some items. He said he waited about twenty minutes and decided to look for him inside the house. That was when the homeowner arrived.

Having only seen one set of footprints in the snow, and not believing Howard's story, Deputy Sutter placed Howard under arrest for Residential Burglary. Howard said he had not taken anything and did not understand why the charge was not trespassing instead.

  • Howard was booked into jail on the felony charge of Residential Burglary.
