UPDATE: SNAP Website Causes Widespread Frustration

UPDATE FROM SNAP: Just wanted to let you know that despite our unfortunate website crash Wednesday morning, more than 3,000 Energy Assistance appointments were set through the online system. The website has been up and running just fine since Wednesday afternoon and all web appointments are now full.

We still have a lot of appointments to set over the phone, so if people are in need of this program they can call 242.2376 to determine whether or not they qualify, and to set an appointment. We always experience an incredibly high call volume during the opening days, so we ask people to be patient and keep trying until they get through. Phone lines are open 8:30-3:30 M|T|W|F and 10:30-3:30 Thursday. We will also have lines open this Saturday from 8-12 to try to accommodate as many callers as possible.

ORIGINAL STORY:

SPOKANE, Wash. – KHQ heard from dozens of people on Wednesday that are frustrated after trying to make energy assistance appointments with The Spokane Neighborhood Action Program (SNAP). SNAP opened their website and phone lines Wednesday for the first time this season, and within the first few hours they told us they received hundreds of thousands of hits on their website.

That crashed the site, and left many people who tried to log on to the site out of luck. Adding to this, the phone line system was also backed up, leading to widespread outages. SNAP says they anticipated a large number of applicants, and over the summer they even took steps to increase their bandwidth, but even that didn't help.

Late Wednesday afternoon SNAP officials told KHQ the problems have mostly been fixed, however there are still long waits as the website loads. SNAP sent KHQ a tweet Wednesday afternoon that stated despite the early issues, they were still able to make 3000 appointments Wednesday.

You can make an energy assistance appointment with SNAP by calling (509) 242-2376 or by going to www.snapwa.org

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - Coeur d'Alene Police are investigating a reported school shooting threat at Coeur d'Alene High School. A spokesperson for the district said that the threat was written on a napkin and shared  on Snapchat. It says: "CHS school shooting 10-19-18. Be ready." Police tell us that while they are still investigating whether the threat is credible, they do not believe the CHS that the note mentions is referring to Coeur d'Alene High School.
