Lloyd McClendon: Six Facts About the M's New Manager

Lloyd McClendon enjoyed an eight year playing career and has been a manager at the MLB level before once before with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He spent eight seasons as Detroit Tigers bullpen, bench and hitting coach before taking the job with the Seattle Mariners.  

Here are a  pick six of tidbits about McClendon's career as a player and as a manager to help everyone get to know the M's new man in charge.

  • The new skipper was born in Gary, IN on January 11, 1959. He attended Theodore Roosevelt HS in Gary, and Valparaiso University. 
  • McClendon spent five years as a Pirate player and a little under five as a manager. 
  • He was a career .244 hitter, better than the .237 the Mariners averaged as a team last season. 
  • McClendon was 336-446 in a little under five seasons managing the Pirates, a .430 winning percentage. The Mariners are 359-451 over the past five seasons, a .443 winning percentage.
  • The Mariners last winning season was in 2009 (85-77). McClendon has never had a winning season as a manager. However, McClendon did see plenty of wins during his time in Detroit, the Tigers were 700-597 over the last eight years, and undoubtedly learned from 22-year veteran manager Jim Leyland. 
  • McClendon was passed over by Detroit in favor of  hiring first-time manager Brad Ausmus.
