Citizens Get First Look At Criminal Justice Commission's 'Blueprint For Reform'

Wednesday night citizens had a chance to comment on the first draft of a report that could reshape our local justice system.

Inside the courtroom located in the Gonzaga Law School, community members had the chance to speak in front of the Spokane Regional Justice Commission about their report filed just last week.

The three person commission appointed by Mayor David Condon and County Commissioners authored the 58 page report with recommendations of how to reform the current Spokane County Justice System, making it more efficient and effective.

Since they were appointed a year ago, the volunteer commission, made up of former attorneys and a former judge, held 37 hearings and spoke with over 400 people before coming up with this draft of recommendations.

They conducted a top to bottom review of the local justice system, looking at issues ranging from recidivism of offenders, jail over crowding, alternatives to detention and even the lack of communication between departments.

Commission members will take the feedback they received Wednesday night into consideration before their final report.

Judge Murphy tells KHQ he hopes in the next month the commission will have a final draft of their report and will present it to the Mayor and County Commissioners. Ultimately, they will decide if and when any of their recommendations will be implemented.
