SEATTLE – Rivalry matches often produced unexpected heroes. In Friday’s 1-0 victory, No. 22 Washington State freshman Kaitlyn Johnson filled the role against arch-rival Washington.

After taking just nine shots while appearing in 17 of the 19 matches the Cougars (14-3-3, 7-3-1 Pac-12) had played entering the day, Johnson scored in the 81st minute on her only shot she took against the Huskies (7-9-4, 3-4-4 Pac-12). It was the first-career goal for the Torrance, Calif., native.

With the win, Washington State extended its undefeated streak against Washington to 10 years. The Cougars are 7-0-3 against the Huskies beginning with the 2004 season. Washington State has not given up a goal to Washington since 2010 and the Huskies have not scored on the Cougars in Seattle since 2009.

The victory also locked down sole possession of second place in the Pac-12 for Washington State, which tied the school record for wins with its 14th of the season. The seven conference wins are also a school record and the runner-up position in the conference is the best finish in the Pac-10/12 era for the Cougars.

Individually, redshirt-junior goalkeeper Gurveen Clair notched her school-record 14th win of the season. The Cougars won their fifth-straight match for the first time since 2002. It was Washington State’s fifth-straight conference victory, something the Cougars had not done since 2005-06. The Cougars won their fourth-consecutive conference road match for the first time since 2009.

Monday, Washington State will learn if it is one of 64 teams in the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship. The announcement will be made at 1:30 p.m. PT on ncaa.com. The Cougar team will be at Paradise Creek Brewery in Pullman for the selection show and the public is welcome. If selected, Washington State would appear in the postseason for the third-straight year, a first for the program, and the fifth time in the last-six years.
