Guard Will Ferris, who guided Newport High School in Bellevue, Wash., to a sixth-place state finish a year ago, has signed a letter of intent to attend Eastern Washington University and play for the Eagles next year.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Ferris averaged 15.1 points per game as a junior to earn second team All-4A KingCo League honors. He averaged more than 20 points in the state tourney to lead Newport to a sixth-place finish at the WIAA State 4A Tournament. It was the school’s best finish since 1967.

“We are really pleased to add Will to our basketball program,” said Eastern head coach Jim Hayford. “He is an outstanding young man and he’s a great student and person. Will is a very hard worker and self-motivated to excellence. We expect Will to be able to play both guard positions in our program. He plays the game with great intelligence, he’s a very skilled shooter and he is a natural leader. He is a great addition to the Eastern Washington University community.”

Entering his third year as a starter at Newport, Ferris is among the school’s career leaders for points (673 to currently rank 11th) and 3-point percentage (39 percent to rank fifth). He also serves as team captain.

Ferris led Newport to a 19-10 record in the 2012-13 season, including a 2-2 record in the State 4A Tournament. The Knights lost to eventual champion Curtis 62-40 in the quarterfinals, but defeated Bothell 65-38 in the consolation bracket for the team’s sixth-straight victory in loser-out games. Newport ended the season by losing to Central Valley 56-39 in the consolation game for fourth and sixth places.

Ferris had 24 points, including 5-of-9 shooting from 3-point range and four assists against Bothell. Earlier in the season, he had 33 points and three assists in a 91-86 loss to Bothell in the KingCo playoffs. He also had 19 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in a game versus Mount Vernon.

His 435 points scored as a junior rank third in school history, and his 39 percent 3-point percentage (47-of-122) ranks fifth. He made a school-record 89.4 percent of his free throws as a sophomore and converted 39 percent of his 3-pointers (33-of-85). The Knights finished the 2011-12 season with a 10-13 record.

The school’s single-season scoring record is 703 points set in the 1990-91 season by Mark Pope, who went on to play at Washington, Kentucky and the NBA, and is now an assistant coach at BYU.

This year’s team features no seniors, and is currently 1-0 after last Sunday’s 87-58 victory over Pacific University. This Sunday (Nov. 17), the Eagles play in Seattle against the University of Washington.

“Will is going to make an easy adjustment to a team of players who will all be returning,” Hayford added. “He has a great personality and has gotten to know our players through the recruiting process. We feel like he’s already a part of our family.”
