Zag Men Climb To 12th In USA Today, 13th In AP Rankings

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University's men's basketball team, 15th in both major polls last week, moved up to No. 12 in the USA Today rankings and to 13th in the Associated Press Top 25 according to the latest rankings released Monday.

            The Bulldogs are 3-0 with a Thursday home date with Washington State University on the horizon.

            Gonzaga has now been ranked in the USA Today poll for 24 consecutive weeks and in the AP poll for 23 straight weeks.

            The University of Memphis, who will host Gonzaga Feb. 8 for ESPN College Game Day, is ranked 11th in both polls. West Coast Conference foe BYU received votes in both polls.

            Of the teams in the EA Sports Maui Invitational which the Bulldogs will compete in next week, Syracuse University is ranked seven in USA Today and ninth in AP, Baylor University is 20th in AP and 21st in USA Today and the University of Minnesota and University of California are receiving votes in at least one of the poll. Gonzaga and Baylor are in the same half of the bracket and would meet the second day if both win or both lose the first day.

            Michigan State University is ranked No. 1 for the first time since 2001, with the University of Louisville and Duke University also garnering first-place votes.

      The Vandals got up, 20-0, early in the third quarter after a Sedrick Thomas interception on the opening play of the half gave Idaho excellent field position. The Mountaineers stormed back, scoring 23 unanswered points.

      After nearly giving away the lead with fumbles on back-to-back possessions, the defense for No. 10/9 Eagles did the same moments later to help preserve a 31-19 EWU victory over Montana State.

      In the blink of an eye, Northwest Nazarene University had all the offense it needed to collect a 3-1 victory over Montana State University Billings on Saturday at the NNU Soccer Field.

    • Battlin’ Bears Run to 52-3 Win at Northern

      The Rocky Mountain College football team ran for 372 yards as they won at Montana State University-Northern, 52-3, on Saturday afternoon at Blue Pony Stadium.
