Whitworth Women Win Out At Santa Cruz

by Whitworth University Sports Information

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The Whitworth University women’s basketball team went undefeated in California with a 77-61 win over Redlands in the Hampton Inn Classic II in West Field House on Saturday afternoon. Whitworth improves to 3-1 on the season, while Redlands falls to 2-2 overall.

“It was a great effort for 40 minutes today,” Whitworth head coach Helen Higgs said. “Our intensity from start to finish was great. We took advantage of mismatches well and finished plays.”

Senior Kendra Lahue started the Pirates off with a three pointer to give Whitworth a 3-0 lead. Two quick layups put the Bulldogs in front by a point, but sophomore KC McConnell hit a jumper and a layup to give Whitworth a 7-5 lead. The Pirates lost the lead briefly when the Bulldogs hit a three with 8:03 left in the half, but McConnell responded with a three of her own to put the Pirates back in front. Senior Kayla Johnson scored two of Whitworth’s 12 first half points in the paint on a layup in the final seconds of the half to give Whitworth a 38-26 advantage heading into the break.

Sophomore Lexie Zappone kept the intensity by draining a three-pointer thirty seconds into second half action. Junior Jessica Kramer converted an offensive rebound into a layup with 13:10 left in the game to give the Pirates a 51-39 lead. Redlands could not disrupt Whitworth’s offensive rhythm and, despite trading baskets, could not overcome the Pirates down the stretch.

For the second game in a row, Whitworth held an advantage on the boards, outrebounding Redlands 43-39. Whitworth turned 14 offensive rebounds into 13 second chance points and scored 18 points off of 10 Bulldog turnovers.

Kayla Johnson led the Pirates with her second double-double of the season, scoring 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. KC McConnell added 19 points for the Pirates. Senior Jamie Lyons, Lexie Zappone and Jessica Kramer each grabbed six rebounds. In addition to her three offensive boards, Zappone dished out four assists.

Brittany Oster led the Bulldogs with a game-high 24 points, while pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds. Kameran Dage added 12 points for Redlands, while Colleen Goeser chipped in 10 points. Madison Sanders-Curry grabbed six rebounds and recorded a game-high three steals for Redlands.

Whitworth will return to action on December 3 when the Pirates host Lewis-Clark State College at 6:00 p.m. in Whitworth Fieldhouse.
