SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

A homeowner in Spokane Valley was burglarized after leaving his garage door open around 8:00 p.m. Monday night. The homeowner says he was planning to leave again, so he did not close the garage door and left his car keys inside both cars that were in the garage. While he was inside, the burglar stole both sets of car keys, leaving the homeowner in disbelief.

"We never thought in our wildest dreams anybody would come in the early evening and go through both cars and we never even knew it," said the homeowner who asked to remain anonymous.

Leaving the garage door open is something that happens a lot for this homeowner who lives on South Mayhew in the Valley.

"There have been times during the day I've left and forgot to shut it," the homeowner said.

It is a quiet street, so when he came out to the garage and found both sets of keys missing from the cars, along with a few other small items, he was shocked.

"We feel a little violated, it's not fun to have to go through this ordeal," the homeowner said.

The burglar could have stolen both cars, but did not. Now they worry about them coming back.

"Our concern is that they come back when we're gone or at night, and now they have keys to the house," the homeowner said. "So, we spent quite a lot of time last night changing the locks and buttoning everything up just in case."

With the new door locks, they feel a little safer at home. However, they are still far from being finished. His wife only had one set of keys to her car, so it will stay in the garage until they can figure out how to obtain another copy.

In the meantime though, they plan to be a lot more careful.

"We won't be leaving the garage door open anymore and certainly not leaving car keys in the car anytime," the homeowner said.

According to the Spokane County Sheriff's Officer there have been more than 200 garage burglaries in Spokane Valley from last January until now.
