UPDATE: The eastbound lanes have been cleared, traffic is running smoothly again.

UPDATE: One woman died, six other people were taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries.

WSP has re-opened one lane of eastbound I-90. The other lane will remain closed for maintenance and for the investigation. Right now, there is no estimate of when the second lane will re-open.

PREVIOUS STORY:

The Washington State Patrol says one person was killed and at least 6 were injured in a series of crashes Wednesday morning on an icy stretch of Interstate 90 west of Spokane near Medical Lake.

The crashes blocked both the eastbound and westbound lanes of traffic for hours.

Trooper Jeff Sevigney tells KHQ the crashes apparently were caused by driving too fast for the conditions.

In the worst crash, a pickup truck lost control, crossed the median and headed into oncoming traffic. A semi-truck swerved to avoid the pickup, crossed the median and hit a car, killing one person inside. The semi hit another car and then crashed through a guardrail.

At this hour we're awaiting the identity of the person killed.
