Thunderbirds Outskate Spokane, 5-1

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Chiefs were outshot 19-12 in the 1st Period and 46-29 overall on their way to a 5-1 loss to the Seattle Thunderbirds on Sunday night at the Spokane Arena. It was their third consecutive loss to a U.S. Division opponent.

Thunderbirds' leading goal-scorer Robert Lipsbergs got the scoring started at the 11:11 mark of the first period, snapping a shot into the twine from a sharp angled shot out of the left circle. Dallas Stars prospect Branden Troock scored the T-Birds' second goal with a deflection coming on an odd-man rush toward Chiefs goaltender Garret Hughson. Seattle would add three more goals in the final period.

The Chiefs were unable to capitalize on three power play opportunities in the 2nd period – all coming on penalties by Seattle defenseman Jared Hauf – as special teams proved to be a challenge for Spokane, a day removed from an 0-4 effort at Tri-City. By the time the final buzzer sounded, the Chiefs finished 0-for-5.

In the third period, Riley Whittingham scored the Chiefs' lone goal, his sixth of the season, with Markson Bechtold earning the assist. It was the second night in a row Bechtold found Whittingham for a score.

Hughson completed his night stopping 41 of 46 shots faced, allowing all five goals by Seattle. Thunderbirds' netminder Justin Myles, who entered the game allowing 3.56 goals per game, turned away 28 of 29 shots, allowing only Whittingham's goal.

The Chiefs host Eastern Conference foe Saskatoon on Wednesday, December 4 at 7:05 p.m. The game will be the fourth of ten TicketsWest Player Magnet Giveaways as the first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a refrigerator magnet featuring one of their favorite players.
