SPOKANE, Wash. -

If you've ever walked down Frederick near Monroe in north Spokane around this time of year, you've seen it.

How could you not?

"Once you start, it has to look halfway decent or else you shouldn't be doing it," Al Materi told KHQ's Kelsey Watts.

But Materi is 87-years-old and "it" is his incredible Christmas display, covering his front fence, front yard, roof, side yard and garage area. So many lights, in fact, Materi has lost count.

But his love for Christmas was so powerful, a few years back he needed a little more power.

"I couldn't use even a toaster, I had to unplug my water tank because I was so maxed out," he explained.

That's why a new power meter was installed in his yard for the sole purpose of running the show. Materi says it takes three people two full weekends to put everything up – including inflatables, music, lights, moving animals and more.

"It's a hobby, I look forward to doing it," he explained. "I do it for the little children."

Materi says he's been decorating like this for the last 40 years – almost 30 at his home in north Spokane. One year, he gave out 10,000 candy canes to onlookers who came by before running out.

Believe it or not, Materi says he's scaled the display down.

"I gave more than 300 displays away to Habitat for Humanity a while ago," Materi recalled.

Still, it costs about $500 to run the show for three weeks through January 2nd. And Materi wouldn't have it any other way.
