SPOKANE, Wash. – Despite five players scoring in double figures the Whitworth University women’s basketball team fell to Lewis-Clark State, 79-69, in Whitworth Fieldhouse on Tuesday evening.

Whitworth (3-2) got the first basket on a jumper in the paint from senior Jamie Lyons, taking a 2-0 lead two minutes into the game. The Pirates took multiple leads in the first half, with junior Kendra Knutsen putting Whitworth up by five, 26-21, on a jumper at the 6:47 mark, but Lewis-Clark State (12-0) rallied back each time.

Senior Kendra Lahue gave Whitworth its largest lead of the first half with a pair of free throws to make it 29-23, but the Warriors stormed back with a 9-3 run to knot the score 32-all. Whitworth came up with a stop on the defensive end in the final seconds of the half and the Pirates took a 36-35 lead into halftime.

The Pirates opened the second half with a 7-2 run on free throws from senior Kayla Johnson, a basket by sophomore KC McConnell and a three-pointer from Lahue to extend the lead to six, 43-37. Lahue followed a Warrior three-pointer with another one of her own, but Lewis-Clark State had gotten into its rhythm offensively. A 14-2 run from the Warriors saw the Pirates swing from up four points to trailing by eight points with 14:27 left in the game.

After trailing by as many as 15 points with 3:39 left to play, the Pirates put together a 6-0 run on three pointers from McConnell and sophomore Lexie Zappone. Junior Jessica Kramer grabbed a key offensive rebound and sank two free throws with two minutes left to keep the Pirates within single digits. However, Whitworth could not overcome the second half deficit. Lyons bookended the game, hitting a three-pointer with 24 seconds remaining in the game, but the Warriors came away with a 79-69 victory.

The Pirates shot 42.4 percent from the field, with 16 assists on 25 made baskets. Whitworth also made a season-high nine three-point baskets for a 56.3 three-point field goal percentage.
