Spokane City Council Keeps Metered Parking Free On Holidays

SPOKANE, Wash. -

KHQ.COM - Monday night the Spokane City Council voted 6-0 to keep parking meters free in downtown Spokane during holidays. However that ordinance will also change how you park on non-holidays too.

Council members hope changes to on-street parking will make things easier and more inviting for folks hoping to head downtown to shop and eat. Meter rates won't change but time limits will be different on some meters.

They'll range from 30 minutes to 2 hours in some of the busiest shopping areas and all day meters in some of the areas surrounding downtown.

One of the controversial parts of the ordinance involved making 4 holidays including Veterans Day and Martin Luther King Jr.

Another part of the ordinance will target drivers who don't pay their parking tickets. Those who have 4 or more unpaid tickets will have a boot put on their car or truck if it's found parked downtown. Just to give you an idea of how big of a problem unpaid tickets are right now there is over $4 million dollars in uncollected fines.

There will be an amnesty period for drivers to pay parking tickets after the ordinance goes into effect next month.
